Leaving school can be stressful, and university is costly.

However, for recently graduated Strathalbyn Christian College student Saskia Ehlers, university will be free, after her hard work and determination saw her awarded a $50,000 undergraduate scholarship from Curtin University.

The $50,000 includes a $6000 international experience in her third year and she will receive $1000 per semester.

Ms Ehlers is one of two regional students in WA to be awarded scholarships — and one of only 15 in total.

The selection process assesses the student’s academic performance and projected ATAR score, while his or her community service aspect is taken into account.

The projected score has to be in the top 10 per cent in a year group and when you only have a class of 20, means you have to be the number one.

“The highlight during my school years has to be the East Timor mission trip, including the other volunteer work around the college, ” she said.

During her time at Strathalbyn, Saskia enjoyed the closeness of her peers and strong support from teachers.

“To be awarded this scholarship is absolutely incredible, I still can’t believe it, and no one wants to be finishing university with a $50,000 HECS debt, ” she said.

“Also there was all this talk of the federal government increasing university fees, so future Saskia can be happy and survive without having to live off noodles.

“I have chosen physiotherapy as I want a career that will challenge me and I can build a relationship with the person, to make a difference.”

Principal Paul Arundel said it was a great achievement by Saskia, who will begin studying for a Bachelor of Physiotherapy next year.

“Saskia was presented with her award at a ceremony at Curtin University on December 8, ” he said.

“We’re very proud of Saskia, who has worked hard to achieve this honour.”
