Washington would 'moderate Trump'
Tim Byron of Geraldton, formerly of Minnesota USA, believes Donald Trump could be good for America.
“Both parties have their good and bad,” he said today as America went to the polls.
“But I’m leaning a bit towards Trump.
“I think he’d shake up politics and politicians, which is why there’s so much negativity towards him.”
He said both Trump (Republican) and Hilary Clinton (Democrat) had good ideas for supporting families, reducing taxes and encouraging business.
“But I think it’s time for a change,” he said.
“I’d like to see Trump get in. Remember everyone was anti-Ronald Reagan at the time.
“They said he was an idiot, that he was only a movie star – and he turned out to be the best president America has ever had beside Abraham Lincoln.”
He said Trump’s ideas were criticised for being extreme, but there were checks and balances in the political system to counter this.
“People say Trump’s ideas are too radical, but if he is elected he still has to get his ideas passed,” he said.
"You can make all sorts of statements, but they have to get passed.
“Clinton is a complete politician in her own right whereas Trump is not. He says things that are politically incorrect. But both have shown ability.”
Mr Byron, who has remained a US citizen since leaving the country in 1989, said he could not vote in this election because his paperwork did not arrive in time.
He is one of 67 Americans living in the City of Greater Geraldton, according to the 2011 Census.
