Work has begun on constructing a bridge over the Southern Transport Corridor, connecting Verita Road, Wandina, and Abraham Street, Karloo.

The City of Greater Geraldton awarded the $9 million contract to Perth-based company Georgiou, with local contractors providing $2.2 million worth of products for the project.

Mayor Ian Carpenter said the bridge, when completed in about seven months, would cut travel times and improve safety for Verita Road commuters.

More than 1600 vehicles use Verita Road each day.

Mr Carpenter said the bridge was the City’s largest capital works project this financial year and would provide a much-needed link from the southern to the northern suburbs.

“The City will spend $68.5 million on capital works this financial year in an effort to help stimulate the local economy,” he said.

The bridge forms stage two of the Wandina Karloo Project.

The Wandina Karloo Project is funded by Royalties for Regions through the Mid West Investment Plan, the Federal Government’s Building Better Regional Cities program and Asia Iron.
