Two more teenagers charged with allegedly assaulting police officer in ‘shocking’ attack outside Optus Stadium

Two more teenagers have been charged with assaulting a police officer in what was described as a “disgraceful” and “shocking” attack outside Optus Stadium. The senior constable was conducting motorcycle patrols outside the Burswood venue when he was allegedly set upon by a gang of youths on December 28. The shocking alleged attack — which was widely condemned including by Police Minister Paul Papalia who said their parents should be “deeply ashamed” — was also shared on social media. Police believe the teens had been on a ride-out prior to the incident which also saw up to 60 youth “terrorise” people in the CBD. A 16-year-old boy was already facing charges over the alleged attack before police on Monday revealed they had charged two more teens with assaulting a public officer. A 14-year-old boy from Maddington is due to face Perth Children’s Court on January 17 and a 15-year-old boy from Gosnells is due to face court on January 24. A 19-year-old man is also charged with organising the “out-of-control” bike ride. In the wake of the incident, Mr Papalia said, ”attacking a police officer is disgraceful and the parents of these teenagers should be deeply ashamed”. “We will not tolerate violence and those involved will be hit with the full force of the law,” he said. Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said the “shocking behaviour” had “no place in Perth”. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
