Alt+State Pilates offers free public class once a month for Geraldton community to boost wellbeing and health

In a move to create a supportive and inclusive community where participants could experience the benefits of movement, Alt+State Pilates in Geraldton is providing a free class to the public once a month. Located on the ground floor of the Gerald Apartment Hotel on Cathedral Avenue, the studio features 12 reformers and six qualified instructors passionate about improving strength and flexibility. With about 250 customers, aged between 18 to 78, studio owner Joley Holliday said it was a low impact fitness class suitable for anyone. She said Pilates was more than a workout, it was a mindful escape to find inner peace and wellbeing. “It’s not challenging the same way that intense cardio or running is challenging — it’s very mindful and requires 100 per cent of your concentration and awareness,” she said. “This concentration creates a state of calm in the mind that is so needed in our fast-paced world.” Ms Holliday said the exercise was growing in popularity and she was seeing an influx of members, with the largest demographic being middle-aged men and women. Young parents are also nourishing their bodies, too. “Younger generations are actually becoming more reliable at putting money aside for self-care, and recognise that when they look after themselves, everyone around them benefits too,” Ms Holliday said. “Pilates improves core strength, which improves posture. When we have better posture, we breathe better.
