Basketball WA‘s School Slam tournament was a slam dunk for students as Geraldton primary schools competed for bragging rights.

Friday’s tournament consisted of Wandina, Mount Tarcoola, Geraldton Primary, Geraldton Christian, St John’s, Dongara, and Rangeway.

It was a successful day for Wandina, who won both the boys and girls grand final.

Basketball WA Mid West regional development officer Dan Hunt said “the idea is just to give the primary schools an opportunity to come together as a big group, play the game of basketball and have a bit of fun”.

“You see how hard they’re playing, taking pride in their school colours and it’s a really good day,” he said.

The tournament also promoted healthy eating and exercise, with the slogan ‘Basketball fuelling champions’.

Hunt thanked Clontarf’s Dale Baynes for providing umpires on the day.

“You can’t get referees today, you’d have to ask the schools to provide another teacher and you can’t hire people because they all work.”

“So to have them come in, the day couldn’t happen without Clontarf stepping in and doing this,” he said.
