The winner — or perhaps winners — of the Great Northern Football League’s highest individual award, the J.J. Clune Medal, will be revealed at the QE II Centre tonight.

The award is decided on votes awarded by umpires after each qualifying game, and picking the winner is tricky.

In fact, 25 of the 69 players who have won the Clune to date did not win their club’s fairest-and-best gong.

What can be confidently asserted is the winner will represent a finals team, such was the gulf this year between the top four and bottom three.

A big contender is Rovers’ Jaimon Alone, a joint Clune winner in 2019 with Northampton’s Kingsley Smith.

He missed two games with injury, and though Joe Ugle and Chris Scott will take some votes off him, the centreman was dominant for the Demons.

Others in the mix are Northampton’s Beau Walker and Harry Taylor. Walker is a clever player, and Taylor will win the goal kicking award, kicking 10 or more goals in a game on four occasions.

Teammates Ethan Brown and star ruckman Flynn Dillon will also pick up votes. For Railways, Mitch Boyle, Jesse Adamini and Drew Tunbridge stand out, and no one would be upset if Boyle won, because he is one of Railways’ greats with three Club Champion medals.

Brigades were a very even side in terms of talent and may produce the most vote-winning players with Jack Deschamp, Kaiden Dann, Hayden Johnson and Kim and Jayden Schofield shining — but can one of them win?

From the other clubs, Chapman Valley’s Mitch Thompson and Towns’ Stuart Gaby will have some impact.

For mine, the top five will be Alone, Walker, Taylor, Boyle and Adamini.
