Matthew Michael Morrissey: Geraldton man accused of stealing $23k from Cellarbrations, faces 379 charges

A former bottle store employee is facing more than 370 charges of stealing as a servant, accused of siphoning more than $23,000 from the local liquor store over nine months. Matthew Michael Morrissey, 30, is accused of stealing daily cash takings between July 2021 and April 2022 while working as an employee at IGA and is currently facing 379 charges of stealing as a servant. Mr Morrissey entered not guilty pleas to all 379 charges in May. Geraldton police allege Mr Morrissey was an employee of Queens Supermarkets WA Pty Ltd trading as Cellarbrations Central, located next to Cutler and Smith, when he stole money amounting to $23,552.68 between July 1, 2021 and April 30, 2022. Police further allege the accused rang up a transaction with an amount of alcohol at the point of sale. Once it was established the customer was paying cash, the accused cancelled the transaction and pressed “no sale” on the till and accepted the cash from the customer, police say. Police claim later during each shift the accused allegedly withdrew the amount of cash that was cancelled from entering in a “no sale” transaction and placed the money into his wallet. Mr Morrissey, who is currently on bail, is next due to appear in Geraldton Magistrates Court on Monday, October 2.
