Northampton charge to thrilling 13-goal home win over Rovers

Northampton notched a big result in the Great Northern Football League on Saturday, the Rams showing how much they have improved this season with a 13-goal victory over Rovers, 19.9 (123) to 6.7 (43).

Northampton charged into the game from early in the first quarter and did not let up for the entire match, convincingly disposing of a Demons side that seemed to struggle to get a foothold and get on to the score sheet.

Harry Taylor and Trent Simpson were on fire for the home side, grabbing nine goals between them, with Taylor getting five.

Nathaniel Mourambine had three majors for the Rams and Kieran Harris notched two.

Rams president Damien Harris said the result, a third win on the trot, came on the back of hard work to build up the players’ spirits, with the club looking to develop a winning style of play.

“We are building a community club up here,” he said.

“The boys are focused on good footy.” The club has recruited well in the off-season, with player-coach Beau Jones coming in from the Eastern States and Taylor joining following his retirement after a fourth grand final in the AFL with Geelong.

Rovers put up a valiant defence despite the scoreboard, and coach Ian Comben said he took positives out of the performance, although Northampton had clearly owned the day.

“Northampton were the hungrier team on the day,” Comben said. “We are optimistic about next week’s game and going into the rest of the season.”

He was full of praise for his side after last week’s performance against Chapman Valley, and kept faith in the young squad.
