Point Moore remains closed after severe weather conditions hit Geraldton last week

Erosion at Point Moore has continued to worsen in recent weeks as access to the popular spot remains closed.

The pedestrian and vehicle access tracks were closed last week after increased coastal swells and severe weather conditions created hazardous driving and walking conditions on the beach.

On Monday, the City of Greater Geraldton said City officers would continue to review the conditions at Point Moore, but there had been no updates at the time of publication.

“Reopening of the pedestrian access tracks will be dependent on maintaining public safety, weather and coastal conditions,” a spokesperson said.

“Once the weather and coastal conditions have subsided, the City will assess the condition of the access tracks and make arrangements for their repair.”

“Unfortunately seasonal and longer-term erosion is impacting coastal communities all over Australia. The City has completed a Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP) report for Geraldton. This identifies the long-term coastal adaptation pathways for Geraldton’s coastal localities including Point Moore (West End).”

Mayor Shane Van Styn said the City was currently monitoring higher than average levels of erosion and inundation at Point Moore.

“However, we are acutely aware that historically, the water levels and erosion levels have actually gone much further than they’re currently experiencing also,” he added.
