St Lawrence’s Primary School brings Broadway to Geraldton with Lion King production at Queens Park Theatre

Students at St Lawrence’s Primary School will showcase their hard work and talents when they perform the Lion King musical on stage at Queens Park Theatre next Saturday. Staff and students began working on the musical last November, holding auditions for a shortened version of the Disney classic, using the Broadway junior adaptation. The show features 15 lead characters from Years 4 to 6, using a stage set recycled from previous productions put on by the school. The musical committee was tasked with sourcing scraps from local businesses, including electrical wire, aluminium drums and wood to build props and design the set. St Lawrence’s is the only primary school in Geraldton offering specialised drama and dance classes, and teacher Jenny Attrill said the school had seen amazing pool of talent come through. Rehearsals for dance, acting and singing have been taking place every Friday afternoon since February, with additional rehearsals on Mondays and Saturdays in the lead-up to the event — coupled with before school singing everyday. “We’ve got a stage full of little stars that have worked very hard to bring the Lion King to life for everyone,” Ms Attrill said. Ms Attrill thanked the community for their support. “Ticket sales opened at 9am and by 4pm they’d sold 400,” she said. The show will premiere with a 1pm matinee at the QPT on Saturday, August 26, followed by a 5pm show.
