An old-school arcade game rivalry is set for a New Year’s Eve incarnation at the Bunbury Trotting Club on Tuesday night.

Inspired by a similar Santa vs The Grinch concept designed to help celebrate Christmas on Canadian trotting tracks in recent years, famous Italian plumbing brothers will battle it out for Bunbury honours in the Mario Bros. match race.

Superstar siblings Mario and Luigi — bearing remarkable resemblance to local harness racing drivers Cody Wallrodt and Jack Justins — have already been spotted having a trial run at the Bunbury track and the pair have also been rumoured to have been working on their moustaches in the lead-up to the big race.

There have also been rumours of an appearance in the crowd from Yoshi and Mushroom Toad from Super Mario Bros.

Bunbury Trotting Club secretary Sarah Wall came up with the idea to engage different generations in the event.

“We wanted to give families an extra bit of fun on Bunbury’s biggest celebration night of the year and what better way than to deliver it through these popular siblings, who have been loved through generations,” she said.

Ms Wall said the meeting would aim to be a family focused event with a range of free activities in addition to the on-track racing action including a children’s disco, an appearance by Bluey and Bingo, laser tag, Old Macdonald’s Travelling Farms, The Lego Fairy, face painting, train rides and a bouncy castle.
