Another eight-week fitness program for women who have lived through breast cancer launched in Geraldton last week, offering information, mobility and flexibility restoration in a supported environment.

Term one has begun at YWCA Encore, offering ladies who have experienced mastectomy, lumpectomy or breast reconstruction surgery a free exercise course.

On Thursday, February 9, 12 ladies attended Holland Street School to take advantage of the program and connect with women in the community who have gone through similar experiences of breast cancer.

The program aims to improve overall fitness, manage side affects of breast cancer treatment, reduce discomfort and reduce the risk of lymphoedema with hydrotherapy and land-based exercise tailored to suit all fitness levels.

Encore facilitator Fiona Galvin has run the annual program since 2018, inspiring participants to live, learn and thrive while raising funds for cancer research through exercise.

Participant Kirsty from Drummond Cove said she has participated two years in a row and begun aerobics classes at her local pool because she enjoyed the water exercise at Encore.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed every session, particularly meeting some amazing women. There is always lots of laughter and giggles shared,” she said.

Facilitator Robyn Mickle said she was delighted to celebrate the Encore program with 12 local women enrolled in term one and hoped to see more enrolments for next year.

“We look forward to hopefully helping more ladies in the next program commencing in February 2024,” she said.

YWCA Encore is funded by the Department of Health. For more information visit ywcaencore.org.au/
