Health Careers Expo in Bunbury aims to inspire 250 high school students from across the SW to enter healthcare

Hundreds of high school students attended the Health Careers Expo in Bunbury last week, in a collaborative event aimed at inspiring the next generation of healthcare workers. The annual expo featured 60 health professionals such as doctors, paramedics, pharmacists, nurses, midwives and physiotherapists among a host of other professions. The event, which was hosted by the Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School and the Rural Clinical School of WA, welcomed 250 students from Years 7 to 12 The RSCWA is a partnership between the University of Western Australia, the University of Notre Dame Australia and Curtin University which offers medical students (in their final years of study) a 12-month placement at a regional site. RCSWA high school program coordinator Emma Cooper said the students were amazed by the practical tuition they received from medical, nursing and allied health leaders, which included ultrasounding a pregnant woman. “The way our expo differs from others is that every skills station is totally hands-on and interactive and the students learn so much,” Ms Cooper said. “It was great to have all WA universities in the building too and to see the professionals networking just as much as the students.” BCGS deputy head of school Kathy Chiera said they were thrilled to host the event again as part of its Medical and Allied Health Program. “Growing from humble beginnings, the expo has got bigger and better each year,” she said. “Students leave better informed, inspired and motivated to work towards a career in health.”
