Kununurra swimming pool may be closed this wet season but the PCYC has plenty of on country trips for young people keen to swim these school holidays.

Kununurra PCYC manager Bobbie Joe-Wilson said bus trips to Swim Beach, Molly Springs, The Grotto and Lake Argyle would be happening about twice a week in January for people aged 10 to 18.

“Those trips will be the highlight of the school holiday program,” Ms Joe-Wilson said.

“We will be collaborating with all the other stakeholders to get as many kids as we can to go out.”

The excursions are part of an extensive school holiday program from cupcake decorating and cooking, to pizza and gaming, as well as boxing that will keep young children engaged and entertained in January.

The program is a collaboration between the PCYC and 11 youth stakeholders in Kununurra including Wunan, 54 Reasons, MG Corporation and Headspace.

Ms Joe-Wilson said a new activity would be the VIP Session on January 30 when groups of up to eight young people can book the Youth Hub all to themselves.

“It’s something that we’ve never done before. We’re trying to give young people an opportunity to be given, like a VIP kind of treatment,” she said. “So the intention is to have an hour-and-a-half booking for you and eight mates, and then you get full exclusive use of the Youth Hub.”

For those wanting to get creative, Indigenous-owned local catering service Blak Tapas, which specialises in bush food, will be conducting a “cooking collab” every Thursday afternoon throughout January, which has been organised by 54 Reasons

Mandy Milburn from Kununurra Warriors Boxing Club will also be conducting a class at Kununurra Picture Gardens on January 8.

“Mandy also does all the community kitchen events and Sunday feeds, which is great,” Ms Joe-Wilson said

No bookings are required for the events, except the VIP session.

Young people can just turn up to the Youth Hub or Kununurra Leisure Centre for the scheduled activity.

Ms Joe-Wilson said for those who wanted to go on one of the excursions, their parents or carers should call the Youth Hub and ask for the young person to be picked up from home.
