A truck crash on the M4 has caused traffic chaos for commuters travelling into the city from western Sydney.

Citybound traffic on the major highway was banked up for at least 10km after a truck crash near Burnett Street, Holroyd.

Three of the four eastbound lanes were closed, but two have since reopened.

Delays are easing but one eastbound lanes is still closed.

Motorists were being urged to allow extra time and to take the Great Western Highway instead.

“Citybound traffic is heavy so allow extra travel time,” Live Traffic Sydney earlier tweeted.

Initial reports suggest two trucks and a car collided.
