The Turnbull Government has pledged $3 million for a historic church cathedral heritage and tourism project in Geraldton, as the election campaign enters full swing.

Federal member for Durack Melissa Price met with members of the diocese at the St Francis Xavier Catholic Cathedral to make the promise today.

Ms Price said the Geraldton Cathedral Precinct Project would ensure the preservation of one of the most historic buildings in the community.

“The Geraldton cathedral is a brilliant tourist attraction for the Mid West and with the addition of the Heritage Centre and improved Cathedral precinct it will continue to attract visitors," she said.

Labor candidate for Durack, Carol Martin, offered her backing for the project.

"We need to finish the work that has commenced, as there is little point leaving things half-done," she said.

"I believe people are entitled to a place of worship and I'm going to continue to support my local community whether I am elected or not."

The Federal election will be held on July 2.
