Betts to take the reins at Geraldton News

With 40 years in newspapers and television, Bruce Betts is looking forward to taking over as interim general manager at Geraldton Newspapers, the State’s second oldest newspaper.

Mr Betts takes over from Gerard Marquis, who departs the role today to pursue a career in mortgage broking with Aussie Home Loans.

Championed by staff as a great people person, Mr Marquis said the lowest point in his five-and-a-half years at the company came in the past year with the deaths of former editor Alex McKinnon and long-time staff member Anthea Standen.

He said their passing took a personal toll on staff.

His favourite times, he said, were when the team worked together to secure a big advertising campaign or a special story which captivated the attention of the public.

“I’m proud to be part of the history of Geraldton Newspapers and the Guardian family. It is a massive brand in the market and it’s been wonderful to work here,” he said.

“Bruce Betts is a genuine guy. He has people at heart and that’s a good thing.

“I’m glad someone I know and trust is coming in and I know the business will be in good hands.”

Mr Betts said despite the changes in the news- paper industry, The Geraldton Guardian and Midwest Times were still relevant in the community.

“The Guardian is still strong in comparison with other regional papers. It’s a changing world, but I see a bright future as we continue to adjust to what readers and advertisers want,” he said.

“We are responding with a combination of printed and digital information to give the best of both worlds.

“The local paper is so important and relevant to the community to inform and entertain readers of all age groups.”
