Filipino food, culture focus of big bash
More than 100 people from the Filipino community welcomed the new year at a pleasant family gathering at Fitzgerald Hall.
An annual New Year’s Eve party has been held every year since Geraldton Mabuhay Cultural Association was established in 1989.
The free event started with speeches and the Australian and Philippines national anthems before guests tucked into a lavish meal provided by the Mabuhay association and members.
Committee member Liberty Lopez said typical of Filipino community family gatherings, guests did not overindulge in alcohol out of respect for the broad age range of guests, making it a lovely evening for everyone.
Ms Lopez said there was plenty of laughter and entertainment, children played and many guests took to the dance floor.
On the stroke of midnight, there were hugs and kisses all around and, in place of traditional Filipino firecrackers, guests made do with sparklers, party poppers and noise makers.
She said many Filipinos observe traditions such as placing 13 round fruits in their fruit bowl and eating boiled eggs and specially prepared mongo beans.
Shaking loose coins to make noises at the stroke of midnight was another popular tradition.
Special guests included Member for Geraldton Ian Blayney and City of Greater Geraldton mayor Shane Van Styn, who carried out formalities, including welcoming the incoming Geraldton Mabuhay Cultural Association committee and new president Laarni Maddison.
The festivities continued on New Year’s Day at the beach where guests finished off the leftover food.
