Founder back at the helm of business

A former Geraldton import has returned to the city after an 11-year hiatus with the hopes of reinvigorating a business he helped establish almost 15 years ago.

Phil Martin is perhaps best known throughout the State as the first man to conquer the Rottnest Channel Swim using only butterfly stroke.

But, according to the former British water polo international, he is better remembered in Geraldton for a singular failure.

“I was out on a mate’s boat one day when the boat sank,” he said.

“Luckily someone we knew was fishing from their catamaran nearby and could rescue us.

“I was given a few bungs for that from friends and now that I’m back it’s amazing what people remember and don’t let you forget.”

Mr Martin will take over Bluescope Distribution, renaming the business Bluesteel. He helped found the business in 2001 when it was known as Steelmark/Smorgons and remained at the helm for four years before moving to Perth and then Tamworth.

Mr Martin, who has 20 years of experience in the industry, said he saw the venture as a chance to renew acquaintances and make his mark on the steel industry.

“I started the branch and jumped at the opportunity to become involved in the region once again,” he said.

“I see an excellent future for the metal industry in the Mid West, the gates are open to allow ease of access for customers and I believe we have plenty of support for what is now a locally run and owned business.”

Mr Martin said he would renew connections with local groups, including the water polo club, Rotary and the Mid West Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
