Police are amazed nobody was injured when a car crashed into a children's playground in Geraldton today.

The incident happened about 2.50pm in Foreshore Drive, when a 79-year-old woman was parking a Honda Civic nearby.

Police allege the car shot forward at speed, crashing through fencing, causing extensive damage to playground equipment and the car.

Although there was a large number of families using the playground nobody was hit by the car and the driver was unhurt.

"It's amazing," Sgt Shilo O'Neill said.

"Very, very fortunate that nobody was injured, considering the time of day, that it was school holidays and the number of people in the playground."

Police are investigating the incident.
