Meet bluey, police guard 'dog'

Following this week’s story about the police officer confronted by a goanna in a car, officers in the same region of Australia were confronted today by two bobtail lizards and a snake.

Officers in Dongara, Western Australia, found the bobtails or blue-tongued skinks outside the station on arrival for duty this morning.

“They were in the driveway and didn’t like us entering the station,” acting Sergeant Luke Scott said.

“They were sticking out their tongues at us and then scampered off into some bushes.”

Officers jokingly tweeted: “Say hi to our new guard dog "Bluey". Well he thinks he's a guard dog.”

Also in WA’s Mid West today, officers at Morawa tweeted about the discovery of a snake this morning: “First job of the day, wildlife patrols!”.

Sergeant Mike Martin said a local mum had just returned home after dropping the kids off at school and was about to wash the car when she made the discovery.

He said when she could not contact a snake catcher she called on the boys in blue.

"We rushed around there and poked around for about 20 minutes but could not find it," he said.

"Probably just as well - you might have heard the screams from here if we had."

Sgt Martin said the call-out provided some excitement for his New Zealander colleague, who was hoping to see a live snake up close.

Maybe next time.

Greenough Wildlife and Bird Park manager Michelle Jones is urging people to take extra care as cold-blooded reptiles emerge for the warmer weather.
