A hot weekend has led to some fires around the region, with local fire teams managing to bring two under control on Sunday afternoon before things got out of hand.

One blaze broke out in White Peak, and was brought under control by by volunteers and staff firefighters coordinated through the Shire of Chapman Valley, but a Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said it appeared as if it had reignited twice.

The fire was brought under control again around 3.30pm, and was to be patrolled and monitored for the rest of the evening to ensure it didn’t flare up.

Another fire was started near the corner of Utakarra Road and Blencowe Road around 4pm, in which it appeared as if a scooter had caught alight.

The DFES said one crew was dispatched to control the fire, which they managed within a number of minutes, and police were now looking into the matter.

Geraldton Police Sgt Matt Power said police often saw a mix of stolen and old scooters which people set on fire.

“Believe it or not, it’s not that unusual,” he said.

“We’re still trying to work out what kind of scooter it was because there’s not that much left of those things after a fire... all aluminium and plastic.”

Sgt Power said the fire didn’t spread anywhere before crews were able to control it, and nobody was hurt.

Police are currently looking for anyone who might have seen something which would help them identify who left the scooter there before it caught fire.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
