The family of a toddler hit by a car in Geraldton on Saturday say he is awake and is slowly improving.

Noah Archer, 3, was hit by a utility travelling at low speed outside the IGA supermarket in Wonthella on Saturday morning.

He was flown to Princess Margaret Hospital that night and has made small improvements since undergoing surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.

Doctors brought Noah out of his induced coma on Tuesday night after they were satisfied he was well enough.

Staples in the three-year-old’s head were removed and replaced with stitches and an MRI scan confirmed he did not suffer any spinal fractures in the accident.

Noah must still wear a neck collar because of swelling and soft tissue damage.

He is now in a stable condition at the hospital.

Pierre Najar, the boy’s grandfather, said Noah had continued to show signs of improvement since the accident.

“Noah doesn’t seem to be in any discomfort at this stage.

“Doctors will take him out of the ICU and into the ward sometime today.”

Mr Najar said Noah would have to have another operation in about five weeks, as well as ongoing treatment, but the fact doctors were moving him out of the intensive care unit indicated he was making progress.

His aunt Kate Najar said he is still heavily sedated but is showing some response to questions asked of him.

She said he was not able to talk but did say one word, "Mum".

Noah’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds to support his parents, who travelled to Perth to be by their son’s bedside.

Noah’s five siblings, aged between 1 and 10, are currently being cared for by family in Geraldton.

Funds raised will be used to "do up" the house before Noah and his parents returned home.
