WA election 2025: Climate 200 funds teal candidate targeting Labor Minister Simone McGurk’s Freo seat

Simon Holmes a Court’s Climate 200 is now targeting Labor Minister Simone McGurk in Fremantle, funding the independent’s campaign to the tune of $20,000. The Sunday Times can reveal Climate 200 has added Fremantle to its growing list of State and Federal seats in WA where it’s funding candidates. Kate Hulett is running as an Independent in Fremantle — a safe Labor seat with a margin of 27 per cent. Mr Holmes a Court, who does not agree with WA Labor’s insistence that gas will continue to play a pivotal role in WA’s energy supplies despite transitioning to renewables in the years ahead, on Saturday lauded Ms Hulett’s decision to run in Fremantle. “Kate Hulett is exactly the kind of candidate our community of more than 39,100 was set up to support,” Mr Holmes a Court told The Sunday Times. “Kate has demonstrated she has strong community backing in a community disappointed with the way the major parties do politics – career politicians more concerned about their parties and their career prospects than the health and prosperity of their communities.” Climate 200 has now poured some $400,000 into WA teal candidates’ campaigns. High-profile teal MP Kate Chaney in Curtin has just received another $40,000 from Climate 200 — taking the total amount donated from the group to her campaign nearly $230,000 — without a Federal Election being called. One must happen by mid-May. Teal candidates in Moore and Forrest have received $30,000 and $50,000, respectively, and teal candidates in Cottesloe, Churchlands and Nedlands have also received $20,000 each. “I welcome Climate 200’s interest in Freo and gratefully accept the vote of confidence from its thousands of community donors as a strong signal of intent ahead of the WA election on March 8,” Ms Hulett on Saturday said. “It feels completely unthinkable that WA Labor is the only State Government without an emissions reduction target after they broke a 2021 election promise to legislate a Climate Change Bill.”
