The AFL trade period reaches day five and, remarkably, will still only have two deals done.

But, early inaction should hopefully lead to a trade blitz.

Follow all the action with our live blog.

Day done

And that concludes day five of trade action.

The period does continue over the weekend, but most teams take the chance to reevaluate and rest.

The blog will be back on Monday, but in the meantime, the latest trade news can be found at thewest.com.au.

Trade Grades

TRADE THREE

CARLTON: C+

Receive pick 73 and a future second-rounder.

The Blues strengthen their hand for future drafts, while pick 73 will either be used to add a small sweetener to another deal or will be a likely pass in the national draft.

BRISBANE: C+

Receive picks 34 and 66.

The Lions are collecting picks to ensure they can snare Levi Ashcroft with their father-son selection in the draft.

TRADE FOUR

RICHMOND: B

Receive pick 20.

The Tigers add another top-20 pick for a draft stacked with talent. The club will be hoping they can produce a fleet of stars from this year’s draft haul to turbocharge a rebuild.

BRISBANE: C+

Receive picks 32, 42, 43 and 45.

The Lions send a top-20 pick out, but the picks they get back will help them secure the best talent in the draft through the father-son rule anyway.

TRADE FIVE

HAWTHORN: D-

Receive a future first and second-round pick.

The Hawks either know something we don’t know about the coming drafts or have another move in mind because trading out pick 14 means they have no chance of trading for Tom Barrass. If they can find a way to exchange these picks for a top 10 in the 2024 draft, then this trade could end up being genius.

CARLTON: A-

Receive pick 14.

The Blues are just a few talented players away from a deep finals run, and it never hurts to add that talent through the draft, especially considering how deep most consider the talent to be in 2024.

Schofield to stay at the Eagles

In some off-field news Jarrad Schofield will remain at the Eagles despite missing out on the senior coaching role to Andrew McQualter.

Players could be waiting until the final days for trades

While we’ve had pick swaps with some big ramifications it only makes any deals for players more complex with their futures likely on hold until the final hours of the trade period.

Could Baker walk?

Yes, he could which is why Richmond would rather secure a deal for him.

However, Richmond holds the first pick in the PSD so they could just re-draft Baker through that mechanism.

If they don’t West Coast can pick him up as they have a pick before Fremantle.

The latest on Dan Rioli

Suns list boss Craig Cameron was on Trade Radio earlier.

“It will go into next week for Dan (Rioli), we understand Richmond’s demands, but hopefully they can understand ours,” he said.

“We think pick 6 is a very good pick in this years draft, and that is what we have on offer.”

Collingwood list manager Justin Leppitsch on Houston

Collingwood and Carlton are the two main players in the Houston talks, but Magpies list manager Justin Leppitsch said on Friday they are in a holding pattern and will resume negotiations next week.

The trade period ends on Wednesday night.

“Dan hasn’t nominated a club, so it is not like he is definitely coming to us. It is complicated, so there is a little bit to work through,” Leppitsch told AFL Trade Radio.

“The difficult part is getting everyone happy in the deal.”

Could Baker go to Fremantle?

It’s a real possibility the Dockers have been in the chase for him before Baker nominated the Eagles. But now with the Eagles left without pick No.14 he could go to Freo along with Shai Bolton should the Dockers still want him.

The Houston deal

Carlton getting pick No.14 now means they could once again be the front-runners for Dan Housten given how strong this draft is viewed.

What the Hawks’ move means

Hawthorn has blown the trade period wide open with a shock move, trading their pick No.14 to Carlton despite it being central to a move to get West Coast defender Tom Barrass.
