Young gun Caleb Serong, the favourite for the AFL’s Rising Star award, was Fremantle’s nomination for the AFLPA’s best first year player award, while defender Ethan Hughes won the vote for most courageous player.
Fyfe, who is also in the running for the best captain gong, is a two-time winner of the Leigh Matthews Trophy as MVP but did not win it last year when he won his second Brownlow Medal.
Last year’s MVP winner Patrick Cripps has not been nominated by his teammates in 2020. The Blues opted for Jack Martin, Sam Walsh and Jacob Weitering.
The two-stage nomination process involves three nominees from every club being presented to players from all 18 clubs for a final vote to decide the winner. Players can’t vote for their own teammates in stage two of the voting process.
While no defender has won the MVP award for more than 30 years, Ryan is considered a strong chance to make his first All-Australian team and will be one of the favourites to take home his first Doig Medal.
The 24-year-old has had a stellar season in a depleted defence, often called on to play as an undersized key defender.
The awards for most courageous player, best captain and best first-year player will be announced with the best under-22 team next Tuesday, while the MVP will be revealed on Thursday week.
West Coast’s nominations for the awards are yet to be released.
