Patterson takes third place in Diamond League high jump

Eleanor Patterson has again come up short against newly minted high jump world champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh, with the Australian finishing third in the Diamond League meet in China.

Six days after Mahuchikh won her maiden world title in Budapest, the Ukrainian star again topped the podium in Xiamen on Saturday night with her first-time clearance of 2.02m equalling the world-leading-mark for 2023.

Patterson, the 2022 world champion and 2023 silver medallist in Budapest, was third this time with 1.92m.

Slovenia's Lia Apostolovski finished second on countback.

Patterson has enjoyed a strong finish to 2023 after undergoing surgery in February to have a plate inserted in her broken left foot.

She returned to competition in mid-July.

Australian teenager Erin Shaw (1.78m) was last in the eight-woman final on her Diamond League debut.

Linden Hall went within 0.65 of a second of her own Australian record to finish an impressive third in the women's 1500m.

Hall stopped the clock at 3:57.92, with Ethiopian Freweyni Hailu taking the win in 3:56.56.

Hall was run out in the 1500m semis at the Budapest world titles.

Two-time Commonwealth Games silver medallist and Australian record holder Brooke Buschkuehl (6.52) was fifth in a women's long jump competition won by Serbian Ivana Vuleta (6.88m).

In other action, American sprinter Christian Coleman flew to victory in the men's 100m in 9.83 seconds - equalling the fastest time in the world this year.

It was the same time that fellow American Noah Lyles ran to win the world title in Budapest earlier this month, in a final where Coleman finished fifth.

London Olympics gold medallist Kirani James from Grenada pipped American Quincy Hall for first spot in the men's 400m in Xiamen after both clocked 44.38.

Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi set a world-leading 1:43.20 to edge out Canada's world champion Marco Arop in the men's 800m.
