Christian Porter looks set to join his first public role since his retirement from Federal politics, with speculation mounting he will join the board of the Western Australian Cricket Association this week.

The Australian reported on Sunday night Mr Porter, a former attorney-general, would be formally announced as a new board member before the organisation’s annual general meeting this week.

Since leaving politics at the 2022 Federal Election amid historical rape accusations against him, Mr Porter has returned to working as a barrister.

Mr Porter has previously served on the board of the WACA until 2014, when he became a parliamentary secretary.

In a statement to The Australian, WACA chairwoman Avril Fahey confirmed the board had resolved to appoint Mr Porter to the vacant position.

“Mr Porter has been heavily involved in cricket while at university in WA as a player and life member for the past three decades,” she said.

“His experience across law and government, as well as his love of cricket, will be valuable additions to the board and we look forward to his contribution.”

Mr Porter fills the role vacated by former WA governor Kerry Sanderson.

The appointment comes amid a $169 million redevelopment of the WACA Ground, which has been beset by cost blowouts, time delays and disputes over the direction of the project.
