The Cincinnati Bengals kept their slim playoff hopes alive, but they lost starting running back Chase Brown to an ankle injury in Saturday's 30-24 overtime victory over the visiting Denver Broncos.

Brown's injury happened with the Bengals driving late in the fourth quarter of a tie game but trying to run the clock down in anticipation of a go-ahead score.

He ran five yards but hurt himself when he intentionally slid at the one-yard line in an attempt to keep the clock moving. After his injury stopped the clock, Joe Burrow ran it in for a score on the next play with 1:29 left in the game.

The Broncos then scored the tying touchdown with eight seconds to play, and Khalil Herbert took Brown's place in the backfield.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor told reporters after the win that Brown, who totaled 91 offensive yards, had sprained his right ankle. The second-year back rushed for 67 yards on 20 carries and caught four passes for 24 yards.

Meanwhile, cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon intercepted a pass in the end zone with 37 seconds left to preserve the Los Angeles Rams' 13-9 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Inglewood.

Witherspoon made a diving catch after the ball bounced high off the helmet of Arizona tight end Trey McBride on the pass attempt by Kyler Murray.

The Rams (10-6), who lead the NFC West by one game, have won five straight games, while the Cardinals (7-9) have lost five of their last six games.

Los Angeles could clinch a playoff berth on Sunday depending on the outcome of other games, and will have a chance to clinch the division next weekend against second-place Seattle (9-7).

Matthew Stafford threw for 189 yards while completing 17 of 32 pass attempts without a touchdown or interception. Puka Nacua finished with 10 receptions for 129 yards.

Earlier, the Los Angeles Chargers locked in a playoffs berth after an easy 40-7 victory over the New England Patriots.

Led by quarterback Justin Herbert, the Chargers raced out to a 17-0 lead with three minutes to go in the second quarter, before Demario Douglas hauled in a 36-yard catch for New England's only score of the game.

Herbert featured strongly as his side secured a wildcard spot, throwing for 281 yards and three touchdowns.
