Olympic Games: Paris goes ‘Gaga’ over opening ceremony that had crowd singing from the rooftops

The 300,000-strong crowd has gone wild as entertainment headed up by superstar performer Lady Gaga rung out around Paris during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

National sporting hero Zinedan Zidane took the torch into the Paris underground before it emerged carried by the mysterious masked torchbearer on to the River Seine.

Burst of red, white and blue fireworks were accompanied by the fleet of 94 boats carrying over 10,000 athletes and officials to the rapturous crowd.

As the heavens opened a raft of entertainment sprung up in various places within the ceremony precinct, with a tightrope walker taking people’s breathe away before a rousing rendition of the French national anthem rang out from the Paris rooftops.
