A-League Women: Perth Glory coach Stephen Peters eager to spoil Melbourne City’s potential premiership win

Their season may be over, but Perth Glory coach Stephen Peters is eager to rain on Melbourne City’s parade and prevent them from winning the premiership in WA in back-to-back years. Just a point would be enough for City to not only complete an unbeaten home-and-away season, but also finish a top the ladder for the second year in a row. Glory’s finals hopes ended last week after a 1-0 loss to Sydney FC, a defeat which left Peters seething over a series of refereeing decisions which went against Perth. With nothing to play for but pride this weekend, Peters said his side were determined to not let Melbourne City stroll to victory at Sam Kerr Football Centre on Friday, which would mirror their premiership-sealing win over Perth at Macedonia Park last season. “We want to try and spoil the party. They won the premiership in Perth last year, so we want to try and not let history repeat itself,” he said. “They’re definitely going to want to put it to bed early, because they’re going to want to control the game. “Holly McNamara is a brilliant player, so we have to be ready for her. (Mariana) Speckmaier, (Rhianna) Pollicina, (Leticia) McKenna, (Lourdes) Bosch...it’s a good side. “They’ve rotated basically two starting elevens all season, so it’s a nice position to be in.” With his first season in charge almost done and dusted, Peters said it was frustrating to have not been able to capitalise in moments in tight games which went against them. “We’ve all learnt a lot myself, support staff, players. The more we look at it, the more we see there are some incredibly missed opportunities there where we feel like, six or eight points better off would have got us in the top six. “If you look at all the tight games that we’ve had, the tight losses, the tight draws, there’s a lot of opportunities there that we were left out in the park. “On another day, some of them would have gone our way, but on another day, we probably weren’t just good enough to take it so there’s a little bit of reflection required, but I don’t think we’re far away from being a top six, even higher side.”
