PSA footy: Former Fremantle Chris Mayne after his first win as Trinity College coach, Ross Lyon’s influence

Inspired by his former Fremantle coach and current St Kilda mentor Ross Lyon’s defensive mindset, Chris Mayne led Trinity College to their first win of the PSA footy season against Christ Church on Saturday. Just two games into his coaching career, the ex-Fremantle and Collingwood utility’s Trinity first XVIII restricted their opponents to just 38 points on their way to a 35-point victory. “I’ve always loved the way Ross went about his business,” Mayne said. “I’ve spoken to him a few times recently and I’m trying to have another catch up with him, to have a chat about all things coaching. “I think I’m just utilising all of the good coaches I played with and all the good coaches I played under and bring out a bit of my own philosophy and how I want to coach. “Old Ross has definitely rubbed off on me in a good way, that’s for sure.” Mayne said the win was reward for effort and hoped it gave his young charges belief after a few years at the bottom end of the ladder. He used leader Adam De Masi, who made his debut back in Year 9, as an example of something who’s worked really hard to try and get success for the school. “Adam De Masi has been there since Year 9 so it would’ve been a very heart-warming feeling for him and something he’s worked his backside for,” Mayne said. “We’ve got a great leadership group that addressed the the team post-match and said as good as the result was, we want more. “To get the win against a side we’ve struggled against over the last few years and the hard work that they’ve put in, I think that was the reward the group was in need of. “It shows them that there’s a little bit of belief and if we stick what we’re trying to do then anything is possible. “We felt from the Scotch game in the first week that other than the first quarter, we were pretty much in the game.” Mayne said it was an even team effort but gave special praise to midfielder Luke Cotellessa, forward Cole Trinder (four goals), tough nut Ben Thomas, half-back Jaxon Artemis and the rest of the back six. “Everyone played their role and everyone did what they needed to do to help the team win so I was really proud of the boys’ effort and the coaches and support staff,” he said. In other results, State 18s squad member Presley Campbell racked up 40 disposals to lead the undefeated Aquinas College to a 53-point win over Wesley College. Reigning champs Scotch College also made it three wins from as many starts with a 191-point thrashing of Guildford Grammar.
