NPL WA: Western Knights draw with Bayswater City allows Floreat Athena to go top of the table

Western Knights’ unbeaten run upon their return to the top flight has continued, but they have surrendered top spot on the NPL WA men’s ladder to Floreat Athena.

While the Knights drew 1-1 with Bayswater City, Athena’s 2-1 win over Balcatta Etna lifted them to the top of the table after seven rounds.

It came as Olympic Kingsway continued to loom ominously in third spot after another big win, while Fremantle City continued their strong start to the season with another win.

The Knights had to play a get-out-of-jail card against Bayswater at Nash Field when the visitors took the lead through Samuel Dweh in the 85th minute, only for Justin Tang’s even-later volley from a throw-in rescued a point.

However, the dropped two points allowed Floreat to snatch first spot on the ladder as Guy Davies and Mohamed Al-Zaidy found the net either side of half-time, before Ben Hinshelwood’s penalty pulled one back for Balcatta.

Kingsway kept pace with the top two as they ran out 5-0 winners over Perth SC, who coughed up all five goals in the final hour, including four in a 16-minute burst in the second-half.

After Josh Cala’s unfortunate attempted back-pass ended in an own-goal, Perth caved after the break as Liam Boland found the net twice before Joe Knowles and Mitch Oxborrow rounded out the rout.

Fremantle remain a point behind Kingsway as they inflicted a third loss of the season upon Perth Glory with a 2-1 win at Hilton Park.

Pat Loughrey’s free-kick was cancelled out by Glory youngster Jaylan Pearman’s long-range finish, before a former Glory A-League player in Cameron Edwards sealed the win for Fremantle with a header.

Inglewood United’s winless run has continued as Armadale finally secured their own first three points of the season thanks to a 4-1 walloping.

Jordan Brown made it 1-0 to Inglewood in the first-half, but it was one-way sledding from then on in, with Ryley Wishart-Stephen’s penalty and a Luke Collins goal giving Armadale the lead at the break, with Pieter Jacobsz and Lucas Cook adding to the scoreline in the second-half.

Perth RedStar moved into the top six as they secured a close 1-0 win over Stirling Macedonia thanks to a second half own-goal by Danny Douglas.
