WAFL: South Fremantle recruit Trey Ruscoe has sights set on finals already after 3-0 start to the season

South Fremantle star recruit Trey Ruscoe says he already has his sights set on finals after a promising 3-0 start to the WAFL season. The former Collingwood and West Coast WAFL forward kicked a game-high five goals in the thrilling 11-point victory over Swan Districts on Saturday, as the club remained undefeated in 2025. It’s the first time South Fremantle have been 3-0 since winning the WAFL premiership in 2020. Despite 15 games to go in the regular season, Ruscoe is confident the Bulldogs will be there in September. “I’ve set my sights on finals already,” he told The West Australian. “Obviously, I always look forward to the next game and focus on what’s coming up next but I think this team is awesome. “We’ve got a great group of boys and even the reserves boys, they could easily come up and play at any time and fill a role if they need to do that. “Everyone is pushing for positions, so the reserves are fighting to play league and it’s making us league boys think ‘OK, we need to play well to keep our spot’. “I think everyone is just ready. We had a great pre-season, a fresh start with coaches (including senior coach Craig White) as well. Everyone that has come in has brought good energy and good vibes. “With what we’ve got, I’m very confident that we’re going to make it and we’re going to do pretty well.” The 23-year-old is one of a trio of former AFL stars to join the Bulldogs in the off-season, alongside former West Coast utility Jamaine Jones and former Fremantle defender Ethan Hughes, while ruckman Hamish Free returned from a stint at North Melbourne. Ruscoe has already notched up 15 goals in his opening trio of games, including three, four and five-goal hauls to sit just behind West Perth spearhead Tyler Keitel (17) on the goal-kicking leaderboard. The East Fremantle product said being embraced by his new teammates has helped him settle in quickly and it’s paying off on-field. “It’s good fun. We’re playing well as a team and I’m just getting on the end of them. Just shows we’re connected as a group and I’m pretty lucky,” he said. “I know most of the boys here. I played a bit of school football and juniors with them, it was just a no-brainer. I thought I’d love to play with some of my closest mates and decided to come to the red and white. “It’s been a good choice.”
