WAFLW 2024: Claremont look to catch out East Fremantle once again as West Perth make history
Off the back of the most tightly contested season to date, the WAFLW finals series kicks off this weekend with a doubleheader at Pentanet Stadium.
West Perth and Swan Districts - 11.05am
In their first-ever finals appearance, West Perth will host Swan Districts followed by last year’s grand finalists East Fremantle and Claremont.
Coming off two consecutive losses the Falcons will be hoping to put their inaccurate kicking behind them at home in their finals debut. The last two seasons have seen a rapid improvement and an impressive 9-5 record has seen them sit as high as second this season.
The last time these two sides met in round eight the Falcons took a dominant win holding their opposition to just a single goal in the 57-point thrashing at Steel Blue Oval.
The Black Ducks evened the ledger in round 15 with a 7.4 (46) to 3.7 (25) win on the Falcons home turf.
Finishing with an 8-6 record Swan Districts won their last two games of the season to snare a spot in finals and will be looking to replicate their 21-point victory over the Falcons at the same ground just two weeks ago.
The winner will go on to face the loser of East Fremantle and Claremont for a chance to play in the grand final while for the loser it will be season over for 2024.
East Fremantle and Claremont - 1.10pm
The fierce rivalry continues between the league’s best two teams with the winner booking a ticket to the grand final.
Both sides have tasted success over the past two seasons, in 2022 Claremont ended East Fremantle’s 15-game winning streak to snatch the premiership with the Sharks exacting revenge over the Tigers to claim the title in 2023.
The Sharks head into finals as minor premiers with an impressive 13-1 record having dropped just one game to the Tigers back in round three.
Claremont are in fine form and have won their final three games in a row to finish second at 11-3, a whopping 102-point win over East Perth last week will see them come into this game with plenty of confidence.
