Two of the AFL’s brightest young stars will battle it out for Goal of the Year honours, with Harley Reid and Nick Daicos named as finalists for their superb efforts on the run.

Reid looms as the favourite to claim the $50,000 prize for his brilliant solo major against Melbourne at Optus Stadium in round 10.

Reading the ruck tap from a centre bounce and collecting the ball with one hand, Reid burned off champion Demon Christian Petracca and took three bounces through the middle of the ground before finishing from just inside 50m and sparking one of the loudest ovations of the year from the Eagles faithful.

But he’ll have to beat two separate efforts from Daicos, who combined with teammates for brilliant finishes in rounds 16 and 23.

The winner will be announced on Brownlow Medal night through a combination of votes from both the All-Australian voting panel and the general public.

Reid will be looking to join Mark Merenda (2001), Daniel Kerr (2003) and Chris Judd (2005) as Eagles players to score the Goal of the Year honour, while Daicos is seeking to emulate his brother Josh for his nod in 2020.

Reid was overlooked among the three finalists for Mark of the Year, despite earning more weekly nominations than any other player.

The first-year Eagle was the nominee after grabs in rounds six, nine and 22.

WA product Bobby Hill was named a finalist for his round 14 goalsquare grab against North Melbourne, but faces stiff competition from teammate Jamie Elliott, who soared over Essendon’s Ben McKay on Anzac Day.

Elliott can become the first-ever player to claim the prize more than a decade after his first triumph, which came in 2013.

North Melbourne’s Zane Duursma is the other finalist for his effort against Richmond in round 21.
