The image of an ecstatic Josh Kennedy kissing the AFL premiership cup became one of the iconic photos to emerge out of West Coast’s thrilling grand final win 2018.

Six years on, the retired Eagles great will again be getting up close and personal with the premiership trophy - this time, in a tour guide capacity as the AFL’s cup ambassador.

Kennedy was on Monday revealed among a host of former greats to have key symbolic roles in September.

Ex-Geelong forward Steve Johnson will present the Norm Smith Medal on grand final day, having won one himself in 2007, while four-time premiership coach David Parkin will hand the Jock McHale Medal to the victorious coach.

And before the Cats’ 1963 premiership skipper Fred Wooller gives the inaugural Ron Barassi Medal to the winning captain, Kennedy will help chaperone it around Australia and deliver it to the MCG before the bounce on September 28.

The Game AFL 2024

It begins in WA on Tuesday, with Kennedy set to led a tour that will include three days in Perth and a stop in Moora before heading through the Northern Territory, Queensland and South Australia ahead of grand final week in Melbourne.

AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon said the league was thrilled to have locked in their list of greats to help promote this year’s finals series.

“I am delighted that Josh, Steve, David and Fred will join us at the ‘G – all of them have contributed incredible moments on grand final days gone by and we are thrilled they will be part of the post-match presentations to celebrate this year’s heroes who will mark their place in history,” Dillon said.

Kennedy played a pivotal role in West Coast’s surge to the 2018 flag. The two-time Coleman medallist booted four first-half goals in the preliminary final rout of Melbourne to help the Eagles punch their grand final ticket, before kicking three in the decider - including the penultimate goal before Dom Sheed’s famous boundary-line major.

Remarkably, it’s the second straight finals series featuring Josh Kennedy as the premiership cup ambassador after the Eagles legend’s Sydney Swans namesake was chosen for the role last year.
