Police allegedly clocked a driver travelling at 174 km/h on Great Northern Highway yesterday with six children in the car.

Cue police allegedly clocked the people mover at 10.56am, about 20 kilometres south of Meekatharra.

The driver, a Newman woman believed to be aged about 45, was accompanied by a man and six children, the oldest seven or eight years of age.

Senior Constable Frankie McAdam said police were shocked at the reading.

"It's one of the highest readings I've seen in 12 years on the job," he said.

"Then to see the kids in the car, we were just extremely shocked and disappointed.

"Travelling at that sort of speed is a death sentence.

"You only need to have a punctured tyre, hit a kangaroo or other wildlife and I don't see a good outcome."

The driver was charged with dangerous driving and will appear before Meekatharra Magistrate's Court at a later date.

Police allowed the male passenger to continue driving the car so the children could make their trip to Perth, but issued a 28-day surrender notice.
