Health groups are urging Geraldton residents to help stop the spread of influenza.

Annual Influenza vaccinations began in mid-April with free vaccinations still available at the Geraldton Community Health Immunisation Clinic for some groups.

According to the WA Country Health Service (WACHS), local GPs are experiencing routine levels of influenza notifications for this time of year.

A WACHS spokesperson said the spread of influenza and the symptoms could be easily managed with the right procedures.

“The influenza virus can travel through the air when a person coughs or sneezes,” the spokesperson said.

“In the event that you develop an influenza-like illness, you should exclude yourself from the workplace, report the illness to your supervisor and be assessed by a doctor.

“Use disposable tissues to contain respiratory secretions and remember to wash your hands, or use an alcohol based hand rub, as soon as possible.”
