Kids band together to hold charity quiz night
Twelve local kids will be getting together to raise money for Geraldton’s families in need, as they kick off the first Midwest Charity Begins at Home family quiz night tonight.
The Charity’s Youth Committee, composed entirely of volunteers aged 10-16, are organising the event from start to finish — with the money raised going towards the charity’s programs to support Mid West residents suffering from serious illness.
Twelve-year-old Youth Committee public relations officer Koji Dobson said the group had started planning the event about six weeks ago.
“We were looking into what would be the ‘funest’ thing for kids our age, things that would involve the whole family,” he said.
“We just discussed some ideas and a family quiz night popped up, so we did some research and started putting it together.”
Koji said the group’s only real challenge was realising they were competing with the a couple of other events on the night they had originally planned to hold the quiz, but moving it to April 1 gave them the calendar space they needed.
Chris Dobson, Koji’s mother, said the Youth Committee was a great way of teaching kids how to give back to the community.
“The aim is to teach them skills and about the charity, and what it means to work or volunteer for a charity so they can take those skills forward and continue helping people,” she said.
“They did the giving tree [in Mitchell and Brown] over Christmas and they’re trying to organise five or six events a year.”
Ms Dobson said the quiz was a brand new fundraiser for the charity.
“It’s the first time we’ve done it — it is a family themed one run by the kids, and with kid-friendly questions, so it will definitely help to have a kid on your table on the night,” she said.
Tickets are available from Mitchell and Brown at a cost of $10 per person for an 8 or 10-person table.
It will be held at the Casa Blanca Function Centre on Eighth Street, with doors opening at 6pm and drinks available from the bar.
