Cashed-up bogans fill coffers for charity

Alexia ParenzeeGeraldton Guardian

If you thought the local pub and TAB were quiet last Saturday night, it was probably because the bogans had better things to do.

About 240 rallied at Wonthella Bowling Club to flaunt their missing teeth, bum cracks, flannos and, most importantly, mullets.

Although the event sounds like it might have been a handful, organiser and chief bogan Anne Williams said the crowd was on its best behaviour for the annual Bogan Bingo event.

“There were lots of missing teeth, flannel shirts, bum cracks, mullets (both wigs and real) and I admit I shaved my hair into a custom mullet for the night too,” she said.

“But despite the rough-looking crowd, everyone was really well-behaved, we had absolutely no issues because everyone was in high spirits and there for a good cause.

“It was amazing. Everyone was especially generous and just ready to donate to the cause … and to get rid of that filthy mullet Josh had been growing out for a year.”

The event raised a total of $11,046, almost double of last year, which will be donated to Diabetes WA.

On the night, guests donated more than $4000 through raffle sales and festive bogan-themed games.

Ms Williams said she had to shed a tear when she heard the total amount raised.

“I cried a little bit,” she said.

“I would have been happy with raising $7000, but more than $11,000 is just amazing and a real credit to the people who support these events and causes.

“This all started in Geraldton because we wanted to raise money for different health charities and Geraldton has really embraced it.”

In the past, the Bogan Bingo event has raised money for ’betes, boobs, brains and will next year dedicate itself to baby brains.

Ms Williams encouraged people to jump on to the Bogan Bingo for ’Betes 2015 Facebook page for more information and to view photos of the event. She also thanked all of the local sponsors for helping put the event together.
