Shark warnings have been issued for Exmouth beaches after two fishermen were injured in separate weekend incidents.

A man spearfishing off North West Cape was bitten by a reported 2m bronze whaler shark at around 9am on Sunday.

Another man, who was fishing at Bundegi Beach on Saturday night, was bitten by a small blacktip reef shark around 8pm.

Both incidents were reported to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development just after midday on Sunday.

“DPIRD is working with local authorities to coordinate responses,” the agency said in a statement.

Located around 10 minutes drive from Exmouth, Bundegi is a popular beach for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and fishing.

Visitors to Exmouth were urged to take extra precautions in the North West Cape area and at Bundegi Beach.

They were advised to adhere to any beach closures and check the SharkSmart website for updates.

It comes nearly two weeks after surfer Steven Payne was killed by a shark at Wharton Beach near Esperance.

The 37-year-old from Geelong was in chest-deep water just 50m from shore when the shark, believed to be a great white, attacked him in front of his partner and others watching helplessly from the beach on March 10.
