Western Force skipper Jeremy Williams scored his first Test try as the Wallabies pulled off a heroic and famous last-gasp victory over England in their first win at Twickenham in nine years. The first time Joe Schmidt’s Wallabies had beaten a top-five side in the world, Max Jorgensen’s try after time sealed a superb, morale-boosting 42-37 win at the home of English rugby. Australia’s last win at Twickenham came in 2015, and the historic win was powered by a superb Wallabies debut from league-convert Joseph Suaalii, who enjoyed a highlight-laden performance as his guile and playmaking was complimented by a series of impressive moments under the high ball. Suaalii was named man-of-the-match in a stunning international bow, while recently-minted John Eales Medallist Rob Valetini and captain Harry Wilson produced similarly superhuman efforts in the pack. “He (Suaalii) was strong. I thought he was really well supported by Lenny Ikitau — Lenny was outstanding, even right at the end of the game, he took the corner during the defender, released Max Jorgensen,” Wallabies coach Schmidt said. “Those two, they dovetailed pretty well through that midfield. Joseph obviously got a few kickoffs back for us — he’s a bit of an aerial freak, but at the same time, it was a good learning experience for Joseph as well. “I know there was some doubts expressed about him being selected and the risk. I think people would now see the opportunity of involving a young man like that, particularly the way he prepared during the week.” The Wallabies came back from an early 15-3 deficit to lead 20-18 at the break thanks to converted Tom Wright and Harry Wilson tries. Williams, playing his ninth game for the Wallabies, then scored his first try at international level off the back of a clever line-out ploy, before the lock acrobatically placed the ball down in-goal tight up against the touchline. Despite replays suggesting Williams’ foot may have been in touch, the footage was inconclusive, meaning the on-field decision of try stood. Having failed to make their advantage count early, England came roaring back through the wily fly-half Marcus Smith, who set up a pair of Oli Sleightholme tries to give the hosts back the lead. Andrew Kellaway then profited off an England handling error to race away untouched in the 74th minute, only for Maro Itoje to steal the lead back for England four minutes later. But from the restart, England made a mess of things, allowing the Wallabies to regain possession and long after the 80-minutes had expired, the tireless Ikitau fed Jorgensen to race down the wing and swan dive over to claim victory. Force fly-half and Nathan Sharpe Medal winner Ben Donaldson, who emerged from the bench late, played an important role in the winning try with a deft touch pass in the build-up, before knocking over the extras to put the icing on the cake. Force recruit Dylan Pietsch was one of the Wallabies best in the first-half with a series of line breaks and interplay with outside back Wright, but was forced from the field through injury. Another new Force signing, Brandon Paenga-Amosa, also came off the bench late and helped steady the ship as England threatened to snatch victory in the final 10 minutes.
